Advisory Board

The SLS Advisory Board reviews SLS programming, budgets and activities. The Board is made up of PSU students and members of the community. This is an unpaid, volunteer position with a one-year commitment. Joining our Advisory Board is a great way to learn more about the unique needs of a non-profit legal services office, and gain experience working in a professional setting. Advisory Board meeting agendas and minutes are available to the public, you can request access by emailing slms@pdx.edu.

Advisory Board FAQ

Ìý

Q: Is this a paid position?

This is an unpaid volunteer role.

Ìý

Q: What is the time commitment of this role?

Advisory Board members are expected to join 2 meetings per school term for Fall, Winter, and Spring, resulting in a total time commitment of 3 hours per term, and 9 hours over the course of the year.

Ìý

Q: What benefits have former student members found in participation?

1. Professional development & insight into the legal field: Members of our advisory board get experience with a non-profit board structure, experience reviewing and understanding organizational budgets, and various trainings from guest lawyers on topics related to the functioning of a law office. Many of our past student members have found benefit in learning more about the unique concerns of a pro-bono law office. ÌýAdditionally, serving on the SLS advisory board provides opportunities for leadership that can help students build their resumes as well as build on skills such as public speaking, professional communication, and reading financial documents.

2. Having your voice heard: As our office is funded by Student Fees, it's important to us that major changes to our office policies are created with insights from students. Participating in this board will allow you to share thoughts with our team, and help us gain insights into the needs and wants of you and your peers.

Ìý

Q: Can I join via Zoom?

This year our meetings will be taking place in person, and members should be prepared to participate in person on campus in at least one meeting per term. If you need a specific accommodation due to a disability, please reach out to slms@pdx.edu
